The goal of the map is to produce a digital system based on free tools to represent the region of Asturias, with “sensitive information” georeferenced, geotagged, and displayed in automatic mode. This sensitive information is divided into four channels: nodal points, opportunities and resources, conflicts and threats and events.
The digital map is developed with meipi software . This enables the map to be edited using a wiki “in which the user can upload multimedia archives associated with a specific location in the territory, in such a way that the images, personal impressions, sounds, stories and landscapes perceived by citizens can be shared immediately and in a simple, everyday manner”.
We understand that everybody is an expert in his or her own surrounding reality, whether this be on the level of a particular street, neighbourhood, town or valley, or on the scale of Asturias in the wider context of globalization.
With easy access to an online mapping tool anybody can become a “cartographer” by locating and sharing their own content. Additional participation is channelled through video-installations at local cultural, art, and community centres. Mapping Asturias brings the consultation to a local street level with map projections, thus giving visitors a chance for “on site” contribution through direct participation, without the need to be connected to the Internet.
